Lakewood Health System Selected as Top Leadership Team in Healthcare by HealthLeaders Media
Just staying open is a challenge for many hospitals in rural America. To be able to grow and become a regional contributor of care is an accomplishment that has earned the leadership team at Lakewood Health System of Staples, the honor as the 2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare for small hospitals by HealthLeaders Media.

The HealthLeaders Media Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare 2008 program, sponsored by Cejka Search, CIT, HealthGrades and Pershing Yoakley & Associates, is designed to celebrate the outstanding teamwork that occurs in healthcare organizations each day, to share what makes top leadership teams successful, and to encourage other healthcare leaders to learn more from the best practices of top leadership teams. Winners are judged on the leadership team's overall leadership culture, their ability to overcome challenges, and their ability to demonstrate successes that result from outstanding leadership teamwork. Only one winner per category receives this national honor each year.

"Our leadership team has tirelessly focused on developing a trusting relationship with board members, physicians and employees," explains Tim Rice, CEO of Lakewood Health System and an integral part of the award-winning leadership team. "These efforts have created a culture that has allowed us to focus our energies on the anticipation and delivery of exceptional care to our customers and communities we serve."

"Not only was I impressed by the leadership culture, but I was amazed at the aggressiveness with which this team is advancing healthcare for its community," says Top Leadership Teams judge Colleen Meza, CEO of Clearwater Valley Hospital & Clinics/St. Mary's Hospital & Clinic in Orofino, Idaho. "The region around the town of Staples is truly fortunate to have healthcare being delivered by Tim Rice and his team."

Lakewood Health System has grown from a small community hospital to an independent, integrated, regional health network providing a full continuum of services that includes a 25-bed hospital, an attached clinic, 22 medical providers with four satellite clinics, a 100-bed care center, a 40-apartment senior housing unit, a 27-apartment assisted living unit and a senior behavioral health unit. Under the direction of CEO Tim Rice, the leadership also took a patient-centered approach to the design and construction of a new $42 million facility that opened in 2006. In order to reach benchmarks for construction of the new facility, the leadership team had to increase new income by 300% to ensure long-term financial viability in an economically challenged area.

Stratis Health Announces New Building Healthier Communities Award Recipients

Stratis Health announced last week three new recipients of its Building Healthier Communities award--the Evidence to Practice Program of Winona State and the Benedictine Health System, the Minnesota Diabetes Collaborative, and Perham Memorial Hospital and Home.

Since implementing a household model of care to improve the lives of those living and working in nursing homes, Perham Memorial Hospital and Home has fielded numerous requests from nursing homes and other long term care stakeholders wanting to emulate its success. The organization will use its BHC award to create innovative approaches to sharing information about its experiences with others. Stratis Health's nursing home and culture change experts will assist with the project.

"We are very excited to have this opportunity to work with Stratis Health," said Marilyn Olefke, senior director of Long Term Care Services at Perham Memorial Hospital and Home. "Our facility has been on an eight-year journey to transform our long term care facility into a true home for our residents. Not only have we seen improved quality of life because of our move to the household model of care, but we have seen significant improvement in our residents' health status as well. We share with Stratis Health a deep commitment to promoting culture change throughout the state."
"Stratis Health shares our goals for providing quality care. The Benedictine Health System and other long term care providers in Minnesota greatly appreciate the commitment Stratis Health has made to long term care quality improvement over the past several years," said Constance Schein, BHS director, clinical systems.

The Minnesota Diabetes Collaborative received a matching grant to develop and disseminate "Control Your Diabetes for Life," low literacy patient education materials. "This project will promote consistent patient education diabetes messages across settings aimed at people with limited language skills and those who prefer visual instruction aids," said Minnesota Diabetes Collaborative member Laurel Reger, Minnesota Department of Health. "It will promote best diabetes care practices to health professionals as well."

Kingsway Retirement Living Becomes a Reality
Under a sun-drenched sky on Saturday, officials at the Lutheran Home Association in Belle Plaine saw the culmination of a three-decade transformation process become a reality with the dedication of Kingsway Retirement Living.

A large crowd turned out to see past and present friends and supporters of the Lutheran Home Association cut the ribbon on the beautiful new facility. "We are confident that the Kingsway experience will be a part of our historic tradition of excellence and innovation in Christian care and service," said Michael Klatt, the president and Chief Executive Officer of the Lutheran Home Association during the dedication ceremony.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the public was given the opportunity to tour the facility. Planning for the project began in the mid 1990s. The development commenced in 2003 with the consideration of various designs and services.

Gwen Wellner Receives National Honor

The assisted living industry honored outstanding senior living professionals as "Champions" for providing extraordinary care and service to residents. Selected from a pool of more than 300 nominations--the largest number of nominees in the history of the awards program--these Champions demonstrate superior levels of commitment and dedication to their communities and the senior living industry.

Gwen Wellner is among the select group of 21 individuals recognized as a 2008 Staff Member Champion. Wellner is employed at Elder Homestead, a Volunteers of America National Services community in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Each year, the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) honors five "Heroes," representing the program's top five award winners, as well as a select group of Champion Award winners in five categories: Caregiver, Executive Director, Nurse, Staff Member, and Volunteer.

An awards ceremony took place at the ALFA 2008 Annual Conference & Expo, May 29-31, in Orlando, Fla. In all, 80 individuals nationwide were chosen by ALFA's selection committee, a panel of industry leaders, as ALFA Champions of Senior Living.

North Country Health Service and Ecumen to Develop Green Senior Housing Community in Bemidji
Area residents in Bemidji who move to North Country Health Services' new senior housing community next year will enjoy the greenery of adjacent forest land, but they'll also join a green senior housing community that could become one of Minnesota's first LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) housing developments and one of just a handful in the country.

The $20 million development, to be owned by North Country Health Services and developed by Ecumen is being built using environmentally friendly or "green" features and methods. For example, underground parking will lessen impervious surface space and reduce water use, lighting features will prevent light and energy waste, and many construction materials will be harvested locally.

"Three words stood out as we began to shape this project - mission, vibrancy and sustainability," said Jim Hanko, president and CEO of North Country Health Services. "The new housing will complement our mission of assuring a lifetime continuum of quality healthcare services, it will be a vibrant community that allows people to live in Bemidji for a lifetime, and it will help sustain natural resources that we all share."

"This project fully embraces a philosophy that aging is all about living," said Sandy Bensen, North Country Health Services' vice president of senior and community living services. "This will be a community that promotes healthy, successful aging and that honors and celebrates a person's life to its very end."

Slated for a late-summer groundbreaking, the development will include independent living apartments, assisted living apartments, and memory care apartments. The link to the NCHS mission is most evident with the "aging in place" concept where older adults can move in not needing any services and as they age, assisted living services are brought to them when they need them and on an ala carte basis. All living spaces will link to Neilson Place, the North Country Health Services skilled nursing care center that opened in 2004. The project is anticipated to open in the fall of 2009.

When completed, the Anne Street site will have more than 148,000 square feet of livable space in two buildings. Eighty catered living apartment homes, which feature independent living and assisted living will have underground parking. The one-story memory care building will have 27 studio apartments.

Other features will include a library and media center, grand fireplace lounge, commercial kitchen and dining room, two guest motel-like suites, a hair salon and barber shop, community room, fitness room, and outdoor patios and walking paths.

"We're extremely proud to be working with North Country Health Services and helping make this shared vision become a reality," said Steve Ordahl, senior vice president of business development for Ecumen.

Open House Planned in Waconia
Auburn Home
in Waconia, a new facility replacing Auburn West, will be hosting an Open House for the Public on Sunday, June 8, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a short ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m.

The 37-bed facility is a total replacement of the older facility, which may be one of the last (if not the last) facilities with 4-bed wards. Auburn West secured a moratorium exception in 2006, enabling the project.

The new facility features three households for residents with a mix of private rooms and "split-double" rooms. One household is designated for short-term care. Facility staff has begun the process of "culture change," and will continue the journey with the residents in the new building. The new building offers generous spaces for many uses, including a central Great Room and a combination Chapel and Celebration Center.

Catholic Eldercare
President and Chief Executive officer Mary Broderick will retire at the end of 2008, capping off a successful 50-year career in nursing, health professions education and healthcare leadership.

"I've been so fortunate to be a part of this remarkable, quality organization that serves individuals and families in such a loving and dignified way," she said. "It's a wonderful gift to be able to tune in with the residents and their families for this portion of life's journey. Prior to joining Catholic Eldercare, she spent 33 years at St. Mary's Junior College and The College of St. Catherine, with 25 of those years spent in senior administrative roles.

Denzil Carty, flanked by daughters Jaqueline and Celeste.

Grand Opening Celebration Observed
Carty Heights, a federally-subsidized residence for limited-income individuals age 62 and older, held its official Grand Opening celebration on May 1. The program honored the organizations and individuals that participated in the funding of Carty Heights. After the program, the crowd of over 130 friends of Episcopal Homes and well-wishers from the community at large mingled, enjoyed refreshments, and took tours of the building. The near-universal refrain was, "I never would have guessed that this is subsidized housing unless someone had told me."

In his remarks during the Grand Opening program, Episcopal Homes president Marvin Plakut said, "Under the HUD 202 program, rent is set at 30 percent of each individual's qualifying income. In some cases, that figures out to $62 per month. We believe that limited income needn't mean limited quality of life, and the residents of Carty Heights and Seabury are vibrant examples of that. The need for affordable senior housing will always be greater than our ability to provide it, but we're committed to doing everything we can. Carty Heights is a beautiful expression of that commitment."

Detroit Lakes Hospital, Clinic Announce Affiliation
Detroit Lakes' hospital and an adjoining clinic announced in early April they have formed an affiliation that will mean operating under a single, integrated management system.

St. Mary's Regional Health Center (consisting of the hospital, nursing home, senior housing, home care) and Innovis Health Detroit Lakes -- formerly Dakota Clinic -- will now be known together as St. Mary's Innovis Health.

A change does not seem surprising given that in January the clinic's parent company, Fargo, N.D-based Innovis Health, became integrated with the hospital's parent company, Duluth-based Essentia Health. Essentia is now the parent of St. Mary's Innovis Health.

"As we combine various departments and services together, it will create both efficiencies and opportunities for growth..." said Tom Thompson, who had been CEO of the hospital and will now serve as CEO of St. Mary's Innovis Health. "Our integration enables us to... expand the scope of services provided locally and more effectively develop and deploy quality initiatives throughout our organization."

Until January, the hospital had been owned by Duluth-based Benedictine Health System (BHS). At that time, BHS split its nursing home services off from its hospitals and clinics. BHS' acute-care operations then became part of the newly formed Essentia Community Hospitals and Clinics (ECHC). ECHC is part of Essential Health. St. Mary's Nursing Center, on the campus of St. Mary's Innovis Health, will be part of ECHC, and is not affected by the BHS-Essentia split.

BHS' facilities are sponsored by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery. The Detroit Lakes hospital will remain sponsored by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, Thompson said.

As part of bringing the organizations together as one in Detroit Lakes, a new executive team has been named for St. Mary's Innovis Health. Christy Brinkman, Administrator at St. Mary's Nursing Center, has been named to the position of Senior Administrative Leader, a member of this team. As part of her new role, Brinkman will continue to serve as the Administrator of the nursing home, but will expand her oversight areas into the hospital and clinic. Other members of the executive team are: Jean Evans and Linda Walz (Senior Administrative Leaders), Dr. George Portilla, Dr. Brad Refsland, Dr. Jim Christensen (Senior Physician Leaders), Tom Thompson (Chief Executive Officer), and Dr. Abigail Ring (Chief Medical Officer).

Augustana on the Cutting Edge of the Longevity Revolution
The Augustana Health and Longevity Institute, a newly created education and research division of Augustana Care Corporation, has formed a strategic alliance with the University of Minnesota-Center for Spirituality and Healing and the Inventure Group to offer the Working On Purpose workshop. Richard Leider, a famous pioneer in the field of career development, created the Working On Purpose workshop. The goal of the workshop is to assist the participant in uncovering or discovering their purpose in the second half of life. It includes asking and answering the question, "What makes me want to get out of bed in the morning?" The answer is important because purpose radically affects aging. It can also explore alternatives to conventional notions of work.

The target markets for this workshop are baby boomers to older adults. The Institute will also implement a trend watch and open discussion forum. By collecting survey data and initiating conversations with participants and online subscribers, the Institute anticipates reporting and responding to survey and wider market trends with expanding choices in innovative products and services.

The Augustana Health and Longevity Institute and the alliance with their Purpose Project partners will be the start of a larger full service resource for older adults that will include work, purpose, wellness, financial and leisure.

The first all-day Working on Purpose workshops are slated for Feb. 27 at the Augustana Minneapolis campus and Feb. 28 at Augustana Regent in Burnsville, with noted presenter, Elizabeth Craig. The fee is $160 per person. Call Lynda at 612 238-5218 or visit http://www.Augustanacare.org/purpose for information and registration.

Episcopal Homes' Second HUD 202 Opens with Full House, Waiting List
Carty Heights, located at 412 Dunlap Street North in St. Paul brings 49 much-needed affordable apartments to neighborhood seniors age 62+. Carty Heights is named after Fr. Denzil Carty (1904-1975), rector of nearby St. Philip's Episcopal Church, advocate for civil rights and affordable minority housing, and father of three daughters.

Third and fourth-floor residents began moving in on Nov. 1. First and second-floor apartments will be ready for occupancy by Dec. 1. All units were leased prior to opening day, and there is already a substantial waiting list. The residence features classic Arts and Crafts period architecture, and it is the nation's first and only HUD 202 project with geothermal heating and cooling. Fr.
