Nursing Loan Forgiveness

Nursing Loan Forgiveness is available to Aging Services of Minnesota's nursing home employees pursuing RN or LPN training can apply for the loan forgiveness program administered by the Minnesota Department of Health's Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (ORHPC).

Selected students are eligible for up to four years of loan forgiveness. For each year that a student serves as a RN or LPN in a nursing home for an average of 30 hours per week, the ORHPC will pay them directly an annual lump sum of approximately $3,500. Participants in the program must complete a minimum of three years of service in a nursing home, beginning no later than March following completion of their nursing education program. The ORHPC also requires the annual verification that the student is practicing in a nursing home in Minnesota.

The number of applicants ORHPC may select for participation per year varies, but approximately 25 awards are given based upon the program budget allotted by the state legislature and the average graduating student debt level for the given year. Prospective participants must complete and return the application while they are in school for their RN or LPN training during the current application year (July 1 to Dec. 1). For those who have already participated in past years, applications are specific to each fiscal year and must be resubmitted each year a prospective participant wishes to be considered for selection.
