Passing of Cheryl Cummings

Cheryl Lynn Cummings of Montrose, MI age 68 died suddenly on August 9, 2020, at Ascension Hospital in Macomb County following a serious surgery. A memorial will take place at a future date.

Cheryl was born on 9/15/1951 in Flint, MI., to the late Richard D. Cummings and Vlasta (Lukavec) Cummings. She was a lifelong resident of Montrose, MI and graduate of Hill McCloy High School class of 1969. When her mother Vlasta (Jo) took ill she was a wonderful caregiver and helped raise and guardian to her younger sister Chris (Tina) Gibbs.

Cheryl was an avid Horse/animal lover to say the least. She had horses since she was the age of 6 years old until last February when she lost her beloved race horse (Mister) in Powell’s barn fire. She had boarded, trained, horses at Powell’s Stables. She had a way with horses no one knew. She was a true Horse Whisperer. She loved them so much. She also owned many black labs and her last dog Sheba was a Doberman. Her backyard was always full of birds and she fed the wild critters.

She worked for many years at Powell’s Sand and Gravel Company for Jack Powell. She also worked and took care of (60) horses and managed the tack store at Kee-Wah- Din Farms in Montrose, MI for Robert Blanford. She also traveled to Canada to deliver horses and later managed his tack store. She owned Cummings Stables and managed the tack store in Sports Creek Raceway in Swartz Creek, MI and Jackson Raceway until it closed.

Cheryl was such a multi-talented woman; she was a Horse 4-H leader in Montrose after she graduated from High School. Her many hobbies were horses, sewing, painting, crocheting, writing, reading, woodworking and even built her own barn when she was 18 at Jack Powell’s Farm. There was not one thing Cheryl could not do! She was a sister anyone would be proud to have! You were very blessed to have been a friend to Cheryl.

Surviving are: Sisters: Sheila Ostling of NC, Chris (Tina) and Dan Gibbs of New Lothrop. Art and (Kay) Cummings of Jupiter, FL. Sister-in-law Beverly Cummings. She had several Nieces and Nephews and many grand nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved and spoiled over the years. Lifelong friends who are really like family: Peggy Wilhelm, Sue Hatfield, Jack and Charlene Powell. Wonderful neighbors Bea and Linda Moore. She was predeceased by her father, Richard D. Cummings and mother, Vlasta (Jo) Cummings and older Brother Ricky D. Cummings.

Memorials may be made to the Family of Cheryl Cummings for funeral expenses.
