Walter A. (Tex) Bird, of South Lyon, MI was born in Sylvania, OH, on October 10, 1933 and died on June 8, 2013. He was an avid bowler and played baseball in the Yankee’s farm system for a short time. He was in the tile business the rest of his life working around the country on major stores and businesses. He was most proud of his tile work at The Red Mile, where he was introduced to the Standardbred horses and harness racing. He was known for wearing his big Texas cowboy hat at the track.
Walter over the last 35 years owned or bred, in full or partnership on 47 Standardbred horses. His horses include, Texas Style (his first), Royal Navy, Peace Pac, Hero’s Cavalcade, Diamond Edition, Raiders Reward and Best Foot Forward. Walters best and toughest horse was Winsome Woe, as she had 32 starts as a 2 year old. He liked his horses to dance every dance and be on the choo-choo!
Walter is survived by his wife of 60 years Barbara, son Scott, daughter Kim, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Walter you will be missed!
